Name: Jason Smith Age: 31 Sex: Male Profession: Labor Mech Pilot Location: Shipyard, Neo Miami Affiliations: Oberon Spaceway Disposition: Quiet, Reclusive
Character Background and Description When he was 8 years old, Jason's parents shoved him on a shuttle to Neo Miami and left him there. Jason, lost and distraught, wandered until he stumbled upon Bruce Smith, a labor mech pilot who chose to take him in. Bruce was always busy with his work as a mech pilot for a clothing company's factories, working late hours and leaving early in the morning. Jason quickly had to learn to cook, shop, and clean for himself- but at least he had a roof over his head. When Jason was 16, Bruce was laid off from his position due to the shrinking needs for mech pilots in favor of increased automation of mech AIs.
Both he and Bruce bounced between an assortment of part time jobs in the following years as Jason finished up his high school education. At his father's suggestion, Jason accepted a position with Oberon Spaceway as a mech pilot. Jason is in charge of 5 mechs positioned in one of the terminals used in the shipyard, and his contingent's job is to load cargo onto and off of the spaceships- this luggage ranges in size from suitcases to cars, and he's proud of his perfect record of no damage.
Working a labor mech is long, involved work, however. He has, on average, 12 hour workdays. While he mostly just has to watch through the video feeds each of his mechs possess and occasionally give directions, he might occasionally need to intervene on a second's notice to save a passenger's belongings. After his shift ends, he pays a visit to his wife Elizabeth in the hospital. Elizabeth is recovering from a long-term, near-fatal illness, and every dollar that Jason earns he doesn't need to use to pay rent, pay taxes, or buy food (and some money he really should be spending on food) goes towards her care, but he fears that if she doesn't get better soon what he makes still won't be enough.
Jason is a quiet man, slow to trust and equally slow to anger, keeping most people at a respectful distance. People who know him well often note there's a bitter kind of wit beneath his quiet demeanor. He tends towards actions expressing his gratefulness or appreciation, rather than words.
